On these days nearly everyone in Paris has the day off. Here is each date, what it celebrates and what changes for visitors.

What it means for your trip
Only 1 May is a legally paid day off for everyone in France; on other public holidays offices and schools are closed but many shops, restaurants and sights stay open, sometimes with Sunday hours. Public transport often runs a Sunday timetable. A holiday that falls on a weekend is not moved.
Public holidays in 2026
- Thu 1 January New Year's Day (Jour de l'An)
The first day of the year. Most shops are closed and the city is quiet in the morning. - Mon 6 April Easter Monday (Lundi de Pâques)
The day after Easter Sunday. Offices are closed but many shops are open. - Fri 1 May Labour Day (Fête du Travail)
Workers' day, with union marches in the streets. The only holiday that is a paid day off for everyone: most shops and many museums are closed, so plan ahead. - Fri 8 May Victory in Europe Day (Victoire 1945 / 8 mai)
Marks the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945, with wreath-laying ceremonies. Offices and schools are closed; many shops are open. - Thu 14 May Ascension Day (Ascension)
A Christian feast 39 days after Easter, always on a Thursday; many people take the Friday off too. Offices are closed, many shops open. - Mon 25 May Whit Monday (Lundi de Pentecôte)
A legal holiday, but many employers make it the journée de solidarité, a working day, so a good share of shops, services and workplaces are open. - Tue 14 July Bastille Day (Fête nationale / 14 juillet)
France's national day, commemorating the Fête de la Fédération of 1790. In Paris there is a military parade on the Champs-Élysées and fireworks at the Eiffel Tower; roads close around them. - Sat 15 August Assumption Day (Assomption)
A Catholic feast in mid-August, in the middle of the holiday season. Offices are closed and some small shops and restaurants are shut for the summer. - Sun 1 November All Saints' Day (Toussaint)
A day to remember the dead: families visit cemeteries and leave chrysanthemums. Offices and schools are closed. - Wed 11 November Armistice Day (Armistice 1918 / 11 novembre)
Marks the end of the First World War in 1918, with a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe. Offices are closed; many shops are open. - Fri 25 December Christmas Day (Noël)
